A licensed London Taxi driver is required to have demonstrated that they have "The Knowledge" by passing "The Test". What this means is that as long as you're going somewhere within about six miles of Trafalgar Square, the odds of the Taxi driver getting lost are somewhere between slim and none.
I have actually been in a London Taxi when the driver admitted that they had no idea where they were although, in fairness, we were somewhat further than six miles from Trafalgar Square. I had hired the taxi for the day and spent a fair bit of time talking to the driver about "The Knowledge" - great fun! For a 'mere' 160 quid (UK pounds), I had a great day and achieved my primary goal of getting a decent sense of London geography.
